Cook's Hideout: Poppy & Sesame Seeds Crackers

Poppy & Sesame Seeds Crackers

For this month's Home Baker's Challenge, Priya gave us some crispy and crunchy savory cracker recipes. I took the whole summer off from this event and thought I can get back into track with these simple to make savory crackers.
To be honest, I am not much of a snack person. But if I really have to choose, I would probably prefer sweet snacks like cookies, cupcakes more than savory snacks. So when I saw this month's challenge, I wasn't sure if I was going to participate. Also September was a very very busy month for me with the schools opening, both my kids birthdays and the month long mega marathon.

But yesterday afternoon I had some time to kill and since I had all the ingredients decided to make these poppy & sesame seed crackers. They are really quick to put together and they were ready in about 1 hour.
The crackers turned out crispy and nutty. They are quite addictive. I served them with some store bought hummus and both my kids couldn't keep their hands off them. Stored in an air tight container, these crackers will keep well for up to a week.

Recipe adapted from here.
Ingredients: Makes about 24~30 3" cookies
All purpose flour - 1cup
Baking Powder - ½tsp
Sea Salt - ¼tsp
Cold Butter - 2tbsp, cubed
Ground Pepper - ½tsp
Poppy seeds - 1tbsp
Sesame seeds - 1tbsp

Method:
  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a mixing bowl, sift flour, baking powder and salt. Add the cubed butter and using finger tips, rub the butter into the flour till it resembles breadcrumbs in texture.
  • Add pepper, poppy and sesame seeds. Mix well.
  • Slowly add iced water and mix until the dough comes together. Form into a rough ball and place it between 2 parchment papers and roll it out into 1~2mm thickness. Using a lightly floured 3" cookie cutter, cut the crackers out and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Chill the baking sheet for 20 minutes.
  • Bake for 25~35 minutes or until the crackers are lightly golden brown and crispy. Store in an airtight container.

  1. I like both sweet and savory snacks. But if I were to choose between cookies, cupcakes and a savory snack, I would go with cookies & cupcakes . However, these day I am trying to cut back on my sugar consumption and wanted to bake all the savory crackers that we were challenged with. I baked chickpeas crackers and these crackers are also on my to bake list.
